Abstract

Aim
The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of sukshma-vyayama on school students.
Design
64 students were allotted to two groups, one experimental and the other control. The 32 students in sukshma-vyayama group practiced yogic sukshma-vyayama along with some basic yogic practices and 32 students in control group followed their usual school routine programs. The training program lasted 21 days. The yoga group followed some sukshma-vyayama practices related to hand-strength.
Method
Subjects were assessed prior to the intervention and twenty-one days later. The parameters assessed were hand-grip strength, hand steadiness and finger tapping speed.
Result
For hand-grip strength of Sukshma-vyayama group, there is a significant change in the right hand grip-strength (p=0.018, paired samples t-test); while there is no change in the grip-strength for the left hand (p=0.274). For control group, showed no changes in the hand grip-strength for either hand; p=0.536 for the right hand and p=0.419 for the left hand. (Paired samples t-test).
For finger tapping task, both the groups show a significant change in the finger tapping speed, p<0.001 for both hands.
For the hand steadiness of sukshma-vyayama group, p<0.001 and p=0.002 for the right and left hands respectively. For the control group, p<0.001 and p=0.020 for the right and left hands respectively.
Conclusion
The results suggest that the Yogic Sukshma-Vyayama is an important tool to improve the strength and concentration for students.
Key words
Yogic sukshma-vyayama, hand steadiness, hand-grip strength, finger tapping.
