Abstract
Excess bodyweight is one of the sixth most important risk factor contributing to the overall burden of disease worldwide. The number of obese individuals worldwide has reached 2.1 billion, leading to an explosion of obesity-related health problems associated with increased morbidity and mortality. In India, the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS-2) data showed that about 12% males and 16% females come in the obese criteria. In Uttar Pradesh 9.5 % males and 12.5 % females comes in obese category.
This survey also shows that an additional 41 million people are pre-diabetic; with a constellation of risk factor insulin resistance, hypertension, and dyslipidemia that puts them at increased risk for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality are also obese. The Role of Yoga in preventing the progression and complications of obesity and related risk factors like cardiovascular disease has been studied in our pilot study (3 month). Our result shows that there was significant reduction in all physical (Weight, BMI and WHR) and biochemical parameters (Fasting Plasma Glucose, TC, HDL, TG, LDL and VLDL), and significant increase in HDL.
