Effect of Integrated Yoga in Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract

Short term intensive two week residential programme of specific integrated yoga module for Types 2 Diabetes was effective in reducing glucose (fasting & post prandial), oral hypoglycemic medication requirement, symptom score & reduction in autonomic measures (pulse rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure). General health improved with Guna personality (increased sattva & rajas with reduced tamas) in medical supervision.
200 Participants in age range 25 to 85 yrs, who registered for a two weeks residential intensive yoga based life style modification programme.
The IAYTD consisted of specific yogasanas, pranayamas, meditation, relaxation technique, counseling sessions & lectures on (yogic diet, healthy yogic life style, yogic concept of mind & emotion managements & stress free life style).
Symptom score, weight, medication score, blood glucose- fasting & post prandial (FBG &PPBG), general health questionnaire, Guna personality and autonomic measures are including pulse rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate.
There was a significant reduction in FBG (24.2 %) and PPBG (30.4%) (p=0.001 Wilcoxons signed rank test). The oral hypoglycemic drug requirement reduced by 28.5% (p=0.001). Weight reduced significantly 2.27% (p=0.001). The total general health improved with 75.78% (p= 0.001). There was a significant reduction in all four domains of GHQ. SOS symptoms (73.61 %), AI symptoms (74.07 %), SF symptoms (77.10 %), SD symptoms (78.26 %) in whole group. Guna personality showed significant (p=0.001) reduction in Tamas (33.56 %) with increase in Rajas (24.34 %) and Sattva (24.88 %) in whole group. Hence, Integrated yoga therapy is beneficial for Diabetes.
