Abstract
ncidence of lifestyle related disorders in the present century are on rise. Metabolic disorders like Diabetes mellitus, Hyperlipaedimia leading to high risk of developing cardiovascular diseases, gout are posing serious health problems. Naturopathy, modern medicine & ayurveda believe that, the root cause of such diseases can be attributed to faulty way of eating ,behavior pattern & stressful environment.
Type II Diabetes Mellitus is commonly observed in the society. Incidence of type I & type II D.M. is more in the age group >50yrs.Incidence is also seen to affect those engaged in sedentary occupation like Business executives, retired persons, post menopausal women-mainly housewives.
Patients suffering from Type I & Type Ii D. M. are treated conventionally by hypoglycemic drugs or Insulin. Diabetes is often associated with other lifestyle related disorders like-Obesity,Obesity+Hypertention or Ischaemic heart disease. To control the symptoms persons are dependant on 4 to 10 types of different medicines which is to be taken 3 to 4 times in a day. Many times patient’s compliance is irregular. This results into uncontrolled blood sugar level. Initially they start with the lower dose of medicines, but invariably it is seen that, the dose goes on increasing. Conventionaly patients are advised to have three to four meals in a day which leads to weight gain –> increase in the drug dose. Patients are caught in a vicious cycle. They start searching some alternative which will minimize or curtail the consumption of medicines.
Naturopathy belies that, the root cause of all disease is disobedience to the laws of nature. Wrong combination of food, irregular food habits, stress, addiction, age are contributing factors. In naturopathy proper natural food in right combination is considered as medicine. Live natural alkaline diet in the form of sprouts, cooked fresh vegetables, salad, vegetable soup, along with vegetable and fruit juices is given. Dietary treatment is supported by use of five elements in the form of mud packs, specific hydrotherapy. Proper exercises, yoga, prayer, meditation & relaxation techniques are also helpful. Good results are observed in Type II & Type I Diabetes. Subjective improvement is seen like feeling of wellbeing, loss of weight, proper sleep, proper excretion is experienced by the persons. Results are analysed as:-Good control( G C =31.7 % ) ; Reduced Medicines ( R M= 42.8 % ) ;Controlled with Medicine ( R M = 12.9 % ) ; Relief ( REL = 7.00% );No Response ( N R = 4 % ) ;Short stay ( S T = 2 % ).
The results are documented for about 100 patients. Blood sugar level (Fasting & Post prandial) are analysed along with other parameters which shows significant control of blood sugar level with either reduction in medication or discontinuation of drugs.
