Efficacy of ‘sohamm Sadhana’ in Diabetes

Abstract

Yoga science is a combination of our soul [atman], mind [psyche] and body [soma] to lead a happy, healthy and spiritual life. This has been confirmed by modern medical research also/ molecular biology, neurology and immunology have combined to develop a new branch of modern medicine, called psychoneuroimmunology which advocates that, the state of our mind can affect our body’s immune system n health and disease. this is quite true when we observe that, a psychosomatic, metabolic disorder like diabetes mellitus and its complications like sexual dysfunctions, hypertension, coronary heart disease [ chd] can be effectively treated by yoga therapy. this has been proved in India by vivekananda kendra, from its extensive clinical research over the last two decades/ here, mantra yoga therapy with ‘sohamm sadhana’ can be definitely beneficial in a diabetic patient on spiritual, mental and physical levels

1] According to mantra yoga, ‘sohamm’ mantra is the central basic [ mulabeeja] mantra of the 7th topmost sahastrara chakra in our brain. sahastrara chakra is also regarded as the place of ultimate union of paramatman [ shiva ] and jeevatman, soul [ shakti] .’sohamm’ is the combination of, ‘saha’ [he-paramatman] + aham [ i- jeevatman ] = sohamm/ in ishavasya upanishad, it is aptly noted that, ‘ yaha sawaso rupaha ‘sohamm’ asmi’ / - i am your image.

2] mental level- our breathing process is automatically going on from our birth to death/if we concentrate our mind on our breathing, we can feel ‘so’ while breathing in [puraka ] and ‘hamm’ while breathing out [ rechaka ]. thus in one cycle of breathing, ‘sohamm’ is automatically felt/ this is called ‘ ajapa ‘.in mantra yoga, recitation of ‘ sohamm ‘ verbally or in mind is called as ‘ ajapajapa’ which results in calm, quiet and satisfactory mental state. physical level - if we recite verbally or mentally, ‘so ‘ once while breathing in [cystolic stage of the heart] and recite ‘ hamm ‘twice while breathing out [di astolic stage], it is most beneficial for our heart and cardiovascular systym in averting hypertension and coronary heart disease [ chd ] in diabetic patients/ thus ‘sohamm sadhana ‘ helps a diabetic patient to lead a satisfactory spiritual, mental and physical life.
