Abstract

Background
Sâmaveda chanting has a special feature. On the one hand, it is a kind of mantra recitation and on the other, it is sung in a musical way. It is also said that Sâmaveda is the origin of Music.. This is the first study of its kind on the Sâmaveda.
Method
Two experts in Samaveda were requested to provide a recording. A total of six Mantras were recorded. Among them, two were selected for analysis. The recordings were done using the software called Sound Forge 7.0 with the help of a sensitive microphone attached to the computer.
Results
It was found that Sâmaveda chanting displayed a larger number of sub -harmonics than Mantras or simple notes of music. The fourth and the fifth formants have a higher frequency than the fundamental frequency, which was not observed in the earlier cases.
Conclusion
There is some musical component in Sâmaveda chanting called Timbre, which plays a very important role in the musical component. Hence, the sound signal displays more formants than Mantras or simple notes of music (Svaras).
