Abstract
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder characterised by hyperglycemia that eventually leads to vascular damage (micro-vascular, macro-vascular). There are no clear therapeutic options for long term effective control of hyperglycemia and at present, modern medicine relies heavily on lab-linked, technology-driven parameters and mainly drug administration for the treatment protocol.
The various metabolic pathways inside the cell are very complex. Glycolytic pathway is the main Glucose metabolism pathway but it is interlinked to other pathways- fat and protein metabolism, Krebs cycle. All these physiological events are occurring simultaneously or in a step-wise manner but very rapidly once stimulated. What orchestrates all these events is unclear- neuro-endocrino-humoral axis? Complex networks?
Hyperglycemia damages through various mechanisms. Proposed mechanisms are four distinct pathways:
1. Increased flux through Polyol pathway
2. Formation of Advanced Glycation Products - AGE
3. Activation of Protein Kinase pathway
4. Increased flux through Hexosamine Biosynthesis pathway
What science has failed to do is to find one solution for correcting all these pathophysiology when it goes awry!
Health benefits of YOGA are as follows:
1. Physiological benefits
2. Psychological benefits
3. Biochemical effects
All these effects are seen without any ORAL or PARENTERAL drug / substance administration with accompanying adverse effects.
YOGA at the most basic level is a form of exercise but it is much more than that. The comparison of yoga and exercise are as follows:
Yoga with all its infinitesimal wisdom holds the answer for effective control of diabetes. The present scientific methods are unable to explain this phenomenon but it is time for various disciplines to unite and facilitate comprehensive and effective management of diabetes.
