Abstract
Transactional analysis is an approach for interactional psychotherapy also used by individuals to improve their psychological functioning. The key process is called Structural Analysis. The purpose of approach is to increase awareness within the person, with the ultimate goal of making new helpful decisions about future behaviour and life course. T.A. see an individual’s awareness as divided between three Ego States – Parent (which represents exactly the values, prejudices, advice and instructions on behaviour, and consequences if they are not considered) - Adult (the part of the personality which is data recording, data retrieval and decision-making, much like a computer, recording data for computing future events) – Child (that part of the individual which expresses the feelings, attitudes and behaviours which actually existed in that person up to the age of six or seven).
The Cathexis (movement) of personal energy is manifest as a person feels, thinks or acts. T.A. states that behavioural and psychological difficulties result from inappropriate Cathexis of a particular Ego State in a particular situation.
A positive stream of consciousness will take place when there is a quiet distribution of energy within the different ego states, in the Parent, the realization of the value of the attentive quiet process, in the Adult, a quiet understanding that all is well and reasonable and meaningful, in the Child, a quiet sense of peace, acceptance and inclusion of self. The person will realize that this will induce an attitude towards self, others, and life that is inherently healing for the person..
