ABSTRACT

Part I: The Concept of Fasting

Background and scope
So far there has been no authentic compellation on fasting. Few earlier studies on fasting were related to fasting in diseases. But there were no studies on  the concept of fasting in ancient scriptures.
Aims and objectives

  1. Understanding the concept of fasting according to yoga and spiritual lore.
  2. Understanding modern concept of fasting
  3. To compare and correlate the ancient concepts and modern science

Methodology
The study is basically a review of the rare literature on fasting in scriptures, fasting in different religions. The study explains different methods, procedures, the physiological changes during fasting. It gives yogic basis of fasting, comparison of ancient and modern concept of fasting.
Results
The study says about the similarities between fasting and yoga and literature on  fasting in ancient scriptures.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Thorough knowledge and proper implantation of methods of fasting help in physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels of being.
People undertake fasts- short and long, for curing their chronic illnesses. It is surprising to hear that fasting can be done for gaining good health. There is a belief that one must eat to live and if one does not eat, will grow weak. Food is generally used for maintaining the body and good health, but at times abstaining from food helps in toning of the body. As how a machine or engine needs rest, in the similar way the body also needs rest-externally as well as internally. Usually people indulge in overeating on holidays and feel happy by abstaining from work and think that they have got the needed rest. But at the end of the day they feel more tired than on any other working day and wonder whether they need another holiday to get full rest or not. The truth is far beyond their grasp. For merely lack of physical activity is not called proper rest. From our very birth everyone is so much used to eating regularly and at different times that it is beyond one’s imagination to visualize a state of being, where one can do without food. But how much light and more energetic one feels after fasting for a day or two can be believed only by those who have experienced it themselves.
Fasting does much good to body and helps it to function better. Still it should be remembered that in our day-to-day life also we must try to maintain a balance in the food, we take. We should avoid all temptation to overeat or eat too many things at a time. Food must be taken considering the activity done, rest available, general health of the body, etc. According to Dr. Alla, “Fasting is a useful instrument for maintaining health, for preventing much suffering for improvement of health & for prolonging the life”. 18
The health principles followed by animals and birds are not told to them by any physician.19 Fasting is not related to any medical science, fasting itself is a science. No one found it. It has not come after our creation.  God formed fasting along with our creation.  It's a God’s gift. All creatures have to be following this principle.  Nature is their doctor; nature surroundings are there hospitals but for human beings they have clinic in each street in doctor for each disease, medicine for each problem. Even those human beings are unhealthy. This is our situation at this point what ever the modifications take place in any system of medicine these basic health principles will not change.
God in his creation has taken every care so that its creatures have prolonged life with out any problems. For this purpose He has declared certain commands and principles to be followed by every one. Fasting is one of the Divine Nature’s laws. By following Nature’s laws one can lead a healthy and happy life.

Part II: Mind Sound Resonance Technique after CABG

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
The randomized control study was aimed to determine the effect of Yogic Mind Sound Resonance technique on autonomic variables and psychological status by assessing heart rate variability and administering questions. Out of 150 male patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) in age ranged 35-65 years, 60 male selected patients were randomly allocated into two groups i.e., yoga (n=30) and control group (n=30).They were in age range of 30-70 years. The mean age was   53(SD± 7 years).
Yoga group practiced Mind Sound Resonance Technique (MSRT) in the post operative ward through head phones with a pre recorded audio cassette for 30 minutes twice a day at 9.30a.m and a 3.30 p.m for seven days starting from second post-operative day. The control group continued to have normal care.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) spectrum was recorded by Ambulatory ECG Version 4.1. The initial data was taken on the pre-operative day. The final data was taken on the 9th post-operative day before the discharge. The HRV spectrum as recorded in the post operative bed in a supine position with eyes closed. It was ensured that Epochs of five minutes of HRV were recorded on both sessions. Anxiety and Depression levels were assessed by State- trait anxiety and Beck Depression Inventory Questionnaires. Questionnaires were filled by them selves.
The baseline data on all variables were normally distributed (p>0.05 Shapiro Wilks test). The two groups were well matched (Levene’s F test p>0.1) with pre values. After the data collection the data analysis was done by SPSS 10.1 version.
Two tailed paired t-test was used to compare the pre and post values of yoga and control groups. The difference in the post values between the groups was assessed by independent sample t test.
The result showed decrease in the HRV spectrum in yoga group rather than control group. There was more increase in heart rate in control group when compared with yoga group. Anxiety and Depression scores were decreased in
Yoga  than control.
