Chapter 1: (15 hours)
Vedic Legends, Itihäsa vs Puräëa, Ramäyaëa and Mahabhärata: Structure, tradition, and dates. Relation to Vedic culture. Concept of Avatära. Puräëas: Çaiva, Vaiñëava and Çakta; number, authorship and contents.


Chapter 2: (15 hours)
Historical and scientific information. Continuity of culture through story telling: Harikatha. Concept of Dharma and the two epics. Tirtha-yatra in Puräëas. Concept of Bharata-khanda as a religious symbol.
