Chapter 1(30 hours)
Community Medicine
1. Evolution of Medicine-Ancient Medicine, Scientific medicine, Modern Medicine, Medical Evolution.
2. Concept in community Health: Concept of health, Health and Development, Concepts of Disease, Concepts of prevention, Disease control and eradication, Public Health, Sociai Medicine, Community Medicine, Health services, Plannning and management.
3. GeneraI Epidemiology.
4. Screening of diseases-concepts, uses, criteria for screening, sensitivity and specificity.
5. Epidemiology of communicable diseases-
a. Respiratory infections-small pox, varicella, measies, rubella, mumps, influenza, diphtheria, pertusis, tuberculosis.
b. Intestinal infections- polio, viral hepatitis cholera, acute diarrhoeal diseases, food Poisoning, ameobiasis, ascariasis^ancylostomiasis, teaniasis.
c. Arthropod- borne infections Yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, malaria, filaria.
d. Surface Infections - Rabies, Trachoma, Tetanus, Leprosy, STD, AIDS.
6. Epidemiology of non-communicable diseases. Cancer, Cardio-vascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, blindness, accidents, hypertensions, stroke, rheumaticheart disease.
7. Preventive medicines in obstetrices, paediatrices and geriatrics.
8. Environmental and Health- and occupational health.
9. Basic medical statistics-Censes, vital events, legislation, SRS, notification of diseases, measures of dispersion and centring, sampling, tests of significance, correlation and regression.
10. Health education and communication-Objectives, principles, Aids, practice of health education, planning and evaluation.
11. Health planning - Management - International health organizations.
12. Health care of community- Health systems and national health programmes.

2. Wounds, control of hemorrhage, Epistaxis.
3. Shock- classification and treatment.
4. Dog bite, snake bite, scorpion sting.
5. Burns and scalds.
6. Heat exhaution, heat stroke and fainting, frost bite.
7. Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains.
8. Poisoning.
9. Epileptic fits convulsions in children.
10. Aspiration of foreign body.
11. Artificial respiration.
12. Bandages of different types.
13. Unconsciousness and general principles of treatment.

Recognition, evaluation of ciinical emergencies
1. Cardio vascular system: Acute myocardia! Infraction, Cardiogenic shock, Cardiac arrhythmias, Cardiac arrest.
2. Respiratory system: Respiratory failure, Hemoptysis, Status asthmaticus, Spontaneous pneumothrorax, acute respiratory failure.
3. Gastro intestinal system: Acute vomiting, Perforation of peptic ulcer, Hemetemesis, Hepatic precoma, and coma.
4. Central nervous system: Unconscious patient, cerebrovascular catastrophes, Convulsions, Status epilepticus.
5. Renal system: Acute renal failure, renal colic, Hemeturia.
6. Endocrine and metabolism: Thyroid crisis, Adrenal crisis, Diabetic keto acidosis and coma, Hypoglycemla.
7. Miscellaneous emergencies: Synope, Acute peripheral circulatory failure, Acute reaction, Hypothermia.
