INFERIORITY COMPLEX

Inferiority complex can be a terribly depressing factor and interfere with ones’ growth and progress in the world. It is one of the commonest accompanying symptoms of depressive illness which is associated with chemical deficiency in the emotional part of the brain. Inferiority complex can be nuisance for a person who appears to be normally functioning in the family, society and office too. Inferiority complex develops during early teens when the Childs individuality has to flower out. This is a very important phase in which children shows authority (either parents or teachers) and want to develop “free”. It is very important for the parents and teacher to learn to treat the child as a friend and not show the authority of a parent. Encourage the child to achieve things that are unique to the child. This is the age the child has enormous peer pressure and hence it is very important to recognize the inner strength and uniqueness of the child provide the right type of opportunities (either academic or non-academic) for the self confidence to evolve in a healthy way.

What is self confidence according to Yoga ?

Just like all clothes have fabric as the material, be it cotton, polyester or wool and just like all physical world is made of atoms which in turn is made of pockets of energy be it a solid rock or a human brain, the yogis said that the basic fabric of universe (including myself) is existence, consciousness and bliss (Sat, Chi and Ananda). Through 40 million year of evolution the human system have come up which can now recognize this fact that “ I am a part of this nature.

This I stuff which can cognize the world and say that “I am awake of myself seeing, heaving touching and doing things” is possible only for human race. This “I” is the self that is the subtlest aspect of our mind body complex. The goal of life is to make this “self” express itself to the best of its capacity to be free and joyful. Freedom of the self from the limitations of mind and body is the basis of “self confidence” and “will power” to achieve this the first step is to turn inwards(Avrittachakshuh) and start recognizing the one’s own limitations. The two major limitations that cover up ones “ego” the bright sun within are laziness and destructibility of the mind. Hence regular yoga practices including Asanas, pranayamas, meditation and reading of books that make us understanding the scriptural knowledge can be of great help to remove this cloud of inferiority complex.

The could of negative thought such as I am unless, I am worthless, I am much inferior to my friends etc, are recycling so fast in the mind that “I” the bright sun within is unable to shine forth. Daily morning practice of Dynamic Yoga Practices, such as fast suryanamaskara followed by Kapalabhati and Pranayama can help to unwind this speeded up loop of thoughts which has become a bad habit teaching to construction of the self confidence. It is also important to work up with small “achievement targets” to boost up the confidence level i.e., removes the could that covers the inner stuff. Hence if you are suffering from inferiority complex follow the following.

  1. recognize your uniqueness and give time to grow in that area may be in the form of a hobby or sport.
  2. Never “be-little’ yourself. Know that you are made of the same stuff as any other achiever in the world.
  3.  Do regular Suryanamaskara.
  4. Overcome the fears by reading books like “power of positive thinking”
  5. Spare some time to help shower your love to less fortunate persons or animals such as the handicapped, orphans blind, or sick.
