Aging

Alopecia Areata
With the advances in technology health care and education has been able to increase man’s life expectancy. What used to be 35 years a century ago has reached 100 years today in several developed countries. Increased awareness about birth control has put many nations into a worrying situation wherein the whole population is aging without a proportionate increase of the younger generation.

The term alopecia means hair loss or baldness. Hair loss occurring in patches is known as alopecia areata. It is usually seen in the scalp but may affect any part of the body including eyebrows, eyelashes, beard and any other body areas. It can occur in any age in both men and women.

Hyperhidrosis

Age-related Eye Problems
Hyperhidrosis is defined as production of excessive sweat beyond what is necessary to cool the body. As we know we are warm blooded beings and we have the capacity to maintain a body temperature around 35 degree centigrade even when the weather becomes too cold or too hot. This is unlike cold blooded animals such as snakes which do not have this capacity and the body takes the same temperature as the outside atmosphere.

In this section we shall discuss two conditions of the eye which are both related to aging namely cataracts and Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Cataract is clouding of the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye.

Vitiligo is a condition in which circumscribed depigmented patches develop. In vitiligo there is focal loss of cells which produce the pigment “melanin” (melanocytes). It may be found in disorders like diabetes, thyroid and adrenal disorders and pernicious anemia. Trauma and sun burn may precipitate this.

Xerostomia

Inferiority Complex
Xerostomia is defined as dry mouth resulting from reduced or absent production of saliva. Xerostomia is commonly seen as a side effect of radiation to the head and neck, or a side effect of a wide variety of medications. The most common disease that leads to xerostomia is called Sjögren's syndrome (SS) in which the body’s immune system fights with the cells of the saliva producing cells in the mouth.

Inferiority complex can be a terribly depressing factor and interfere with ones’ growth and progress in the world. It is one of the commonest accompanying symptoms of depressive illness which is associated with chemical deficiency in the emotional part of the brain. Inferiority complex can be nuisance for a person who appears to be normally functioning in the family, society and office too.

The signs of menopause can vary from symptoms like hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia and even severe palpitation to psychological symptoms like irritability, inability to make decisions, lack of confidence, loss of libido, lethargy, fatigue and, even severe depression.
